Composing Interests

Composing and arranging for: the marching arts, young and maturing wind bands, chamber ensembles of all types. I am available for commissions for ensembles of any combination and ability-level.

My musical career began at age 9 as a trumpet player. My formal education was completed at the University of Florida (GO GATORS!) and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. There were many additional formative experiences along the way, including six years as a member of the Suncoast Sound, four years as professional musician for the Walt Disney Company, several years as a freelance musician in the Orlando and Cincinnati area and 23 years as a music educator.

My composition influences and mentors, include Dana Wilson, Robert W. Smith, Dr. Jeff Jordan and Dr. Budd Udell.

When not teaching and composing, I love to read history, coach youth baseball, cheering for my Gators, learn about music and the brain and spending time with my family.

Reviews

Randall Coleman, University of Alabama

“I highly recommend Andrew Poor’s music to all wind band conductors.  His concert music is well constructed and very teachable.  Students and conductors will grow as musicians from working on his music..."

Dr. Matt Stratton, Olivet-Nazarene University
““I have worked with Dr. Poor on several occasions and quite enjoy our collaborations. His skills as an arranger/composer and educator help him to create custom charts that challenge our members..."

A little about myself...

About Me

Active in the marching arts...

My life in the marching arts began as a member of the Suncoast Sound drum and bugle corps over 30 years ago. I have remained active in the activity as an adjudicator, arranger and educator since those early days. I have  enjoyed arranging for numerous high schools and universities.

Andrew F. Poor composer is proud to have his works appear in the catalogs of C.L. Barnhouse, Northeastern Music Publications and Eighth Note Publications.

My true passions are music and teaching. My composing began as a way to better serve my students. As my interest and passion for composing began to grow, I have found that composing provides me an artistic outlet that allows me to reach even more musicians in a deeper and more meaningful way. I'm always available for custom arrangements and commissioned works.

Experience

My commissioned works have been performed at the Midwest Clinic, Music For All National Concert Band Festival, Georgia Music Educators Association State In-Service Conference, University of Georgia Honor Band Festival and the University of Alabama Honor Band Festival.  I have proudly completed residencies at the University of Alabama, University of Tennessee-Martin and Samford University.
